How much does jewellery redesign cost? And more FAQ's

You’ve got a collection of jewellery, some sentimental, some bought many years ago but none of it is your style. If you’re wondering ‘how much does it cost to have my jewellery redesigned’, then let me break it down for you.

The Quick Answer

Most jewellery redesign starts at around £2,500 up to £10,000 for highly complex designs Some pieces don’t need a complete redesign, but can be given new life with simple alterations. Alterations range from £300 to £2,000. Others only need minor repairs. Once I get to know you and your jewellery, I will advise on the best option for you, so you can be confident that your investment will get you your perfect piece of jewellery.

To give you a better idea of how much you can expect your jewellery redesign to cost, let’s look at some of the deciding factors.

The more gemstones, the higher the investment

Diamond and gemstone setting requires expert precision and skill.

The placement of the gemstones is also important, which takes time to perfect at the design stage, so the more gemstones in your jewellery redesign, the greater the investment.

Design complexity affects the cost

If you want your jewellery to be totally unique, like nothing you’ve ever seen before, with interchangeable parts that blow anyone away who takes a closer look, then set a budget to match.

Sometimes it can be difficult to put a price on something that doesn’t exist yet. So before designing, I will ask you what budget you are comfortable with. That way I will focus ideas for designs within that  range.

What metal is your jewellery made of?

Most jewellery I redesign is made of either gold or platinum. Often, extra gold or platinum needs adding so the investment for redesign will be more for 18ct gold than 9ct.

On the other hand, if you start with more gold than you need, you can use some of the gold to offset cost.

Jewellery Redesign FAQs

Q: I’m not sure what the metal is, can you still use it?

Yes, I can X-ray the jewellery to find out what metal it is. Providing it is precious metal, it can be reused.

Q: My jewellery is yellow gold but I only wear white gold. What can you do?

I can re-alloy the gold to make it white gold by refining it to pure 24 carat gold, then adding other metals such as palladium and silver to make white gold with your own original gold.

Q: How do I get my jewellery to you?

You can either arrange an appointment and come to my South Birmingham studio in person, or post using Royal Mail special delivery. If you’re unsure how much insurance is needed during transit, get in touch and I will advise.

Q: How long does it take?

Bespoke jewellery redesign usually takes between 6 weeks and 4 months. The best results aren’t rushed, but I’m happy to help wherever possible if there’s a special occasion coming up.

Q: Will redesigning my heirloom jewellery affect the value?

It depends on the piece of jewellery and the original condition. The monetary value usually increases slightly but there are many factors which affect value. You might ask ‘why invest in redesign without a substantial difference in value?’

A piece of bespoke jewellery, redesigned from something special is about so much more than the numbers on the insurance valuation or the hammer price at auction. Insurance valuations look at replaceability. Something so personal is irreplaceable. Auction prices look at how much someone else will pay for your personalised piece of jewellery, which will never be the same as how you value it.

Bespoke jewellery falls at the intersection of jewellery and art. If you’re the first person to have a commissioned a certain style, your piece becomes a part of history. So the value placed on your jewellery may change significantly in the future by being a trend setter.

Q: I’m not sure yet what exactly I want. Is there any point in me getting in touch?

Yes! I love the challenge of working out the perfect design for you. Over the years I’ve learnt how to tease out the smallest half-baked idea you have and let it become something fabulous.

Q: My jewellery isn’t worth anything, can it still be used?

Almost certainly, yes. If redesigning is worth it to you, it’s worth it to me and I can reuse the gemstones or precious metal or both.
