What Bespoke Really Means: Designing an Engagement Ring That’s Uniquely Yours

When people hear the word “bespoke,” they often picture a ring that’s totally unique — a one-off piece made just for them. But the truth is, a lot of what’s sold as “bespoke” isn’t quite that. In most shops, you’re offered a choice of stone, metal, and setting, but the design itself already exists. It’s been made many times before.

What I do is a little different.

A truly bespoke ring starts with a conversation. Before we even talk about gemstones, I want to get to know you. I’ll ask you things like:

  • What jewellery do you like?
  • What jewellery don’t you like?
  • Do you have any half-baked ideas — things you’ve thought about but aren’t sure how to articulate?
  • What colours are you drawn to?
  • What do you typically wear day to day — during the week and on weekends?
  • Can you show me some rings you love? And maybe some you’ve had and didn’t love — and why?

Through these conversations, I start to build a sense of you — your style, your story, and what matters most.

Because when I design a ring, I don’t start with the stone.

I start with your story.

Real-life examples and the inspiration

Silver ring set with pink sapphires and diamonds. The setting is shaped in a way that echoes a paisley pattern.

Marie’s ring - inspired by the paisley pattern on her favourite scarf she brought from her home country, the Czech Republic.

A silver ring held in a soft white muslin. We can see the central warm blue sapphire, with three smaller sapphires set in a line either side of it along the band. There are wave details etched along the edge of the gemstone setting.

Jo's ring - inspired by the couple’s favourite coastal walk. The sapphire they chose together matched the exact blue of the sea at their favourite beach, the curves of the band inspired by ocean waves.

Celtic sapphire rose gold engagement ring

Sarah's ring - inspired by Celtic motifs, reflecting her fiancé's Scottish heritage in a way that felt meaningful and elegant, without being overt.

Each of these rings came from someone’s real life — from the small, beautiful details that matter most. That’s what makes them theirs. That’s what makes them truly bespoke.

Questions You Might Have…

Q: Can we use heirloom stones or gold in a bespoke ring?

Absolutely. In fact, I love working with sentimental materials — they bring even more meaning to the design.

Q: How long does the process take?

Each ring is unique, but from our first conversation to the finished piece, it usually takes around 3 months. That's longer than other jewellers, but gives us time to explore ideas, refine the design, and bring it to life beautifully.

Q: Do I need to have a clear idea of what I want?

Not at all! Some of the best designs start with vague feelings or half-formed thoughts. Over the years I've developed a knack for teasing those ideas out and turning them into a custom ring design.

Q: Can we design it together as a couple?

Yes, designing a ring together is a lovely experience. About half of the rings I design have both people involved

Q: Is it more expensive than buying a ready-made ring?

A bespoke engagement ring starts at around £2500 which is only slightly more than the starting price of a ready-made ring. So it's not as much as you think and we’ll talk openly about your budget from the start.
