Caring for your jewellery

 cleaning silver jewellery

With just a little bit of care, your jewellery will last for generations, becoming a future heirloom.

How to clean sterling silver jewellery

Sterling silver oxidises over time, which means the piece begins to look darker and tarnished. For silver jewellery with a smooth finish, use a silver polishing cloth to polish the item. You can buy this from any jewellers. Alternatively, you can use mild hand soap. Form a lather of soap and rub it into all areas of the item for about 20 – 30 seconds. Then rinse the piece well and dry it with a soft cloth, such as a glasses cleaning cloth. For textured jewellery like ours, hand soap is ideal, as it reaches all the intricate crevices, which are more difficult to access with a polishing cloth. You may also wish to use an old toothbrush for hard to reach areas.

Try to avoid getting lotions, perfume or makeup on your jewellery and keep it safely in its jewellery box while you're not wearing it. Also avoid wearing your jewellery while exercising, as sweat can increase the tarnishing of silver. Jewellery should always be removed at night.

If your silver jewellery item contains a porous stone, gem or pearl, do not use hand soap, as it can damage the porous component. A simple polishing cloth is ideal in this case.
